Ying He Hui Guan (应和会馆 )

8 x 9.5 x 26 cm (box), 2.4 x 7.5 x 1.5 cm/piece x34

Wood, Nail Polish, Textured Paint, Gloss Card

The work repurposes the Jenga toy to comment on the exhumation of cemeteries for infrastructural development in Singapore. The blocks resemble the headstones from an exhumed cemetery and historical site, Ying Fo Fui Kuan. Chinese proverbs on honoring our ancestors are written on each block, showing how cemeteries connect us to our heritage. Hence, the audience’s interaction with the work –– removing blocks to build up the building –– mimics the exhumation process and the erosion of culture. Overtime, the tower becomes unsteady, reflecting how development can cause cultural collapse.
