Glossy Waterproof Sticker, Rubik’s Cube
5cm x 5cm x 5cm
Featuring mundane scenes of 6 different districts on each of the 6 cube faces, I show how Singapore has been designed similarly across the island. The small scale of the cube reflects Singapore’s minute size. When it is rotated, images rearrange into new combinations and images, hence extending them through newfound possibility. However, the new images still look similar to the originals. This mimics how Singapore, amid rapid development and change, has forgone its natural essence, becoming starkly artificial. Brightly colored, gloss-coated stickers also accentuate this superficiality; every element designed and planned to develop into the ‘Garden City’ today. Likewise, each element on each face has been planned to allow coherence in the design, with my editing processes creating a like sense of superficiality.
