Listen Speak Hate Chinese (听说渎写)
5.5 x 5.5 x 8 cm/piece x6
Rubik’s Cube, Pen, Gloss Vinyl Sticker, Gloss Cardstock, Transparency
During the 1980s “Speak Mandarin Campaign”, dialects in Singapore were banned for development. Back in the day, dialect clans helped Chinese immigrants feel welcomed (symbolized by illustrations of entrances of clan sites on each cube). Hence, they are intrinsic to Singaporean Chinese heritage. However, the campaign rendered these clans obsolete, as represented by the repurposed unsolvable Rubik’s cube toys, where the images will never all align. The cause of dissension is brought to light when the audience reads the hidden Chinese words on the faces, spelling out campaign slogans.
